What To Do Or Say When Someone You Know Is Clearly Depressed
Depression is an all too common condition which many people tend to suffer from, it may even be present in the people with whom you interact with every day but you may not have noticed even though the subtle signs are there for all to see. If someone you know or love is showing signs of depression, then you need to try your utmost to make them feel just a little better. I do not mean that you should turn into their therapist but I am saying that you should be more empathetic and understanding in order to help them recover.
Understand the condition yourself
Educating yourself is key to helping out your loved one get over this problem. The more you know the better you can help them on the journey to recovery. Know that this is a serious condition (sadly, one I have seen too many times to count) and it cannot be instantly ‘fixed’ by anyone other than the depressed person, this person should learn to find happiness and it is a process they have to mentally try and get through themselves. You can however support them through it. And if you really want to go the extra mile, then get in touch with a health and wellness coach who might be able to help you better understand the intricacies in dealing with such a condition.
Show them you care through words and actions
Kind words do wonders! Remind the depressed individual that you are there for them and you love and care for them. Be understanding and encouraging, remind them that they are important to you.
If you really need extra help, then talk to an nlp coach who will assist you with what you can and should say. Show them that you are thinking of them through your actions by sending them a heartfelt text or buying them a small gift and then surprising them with it.
The attitude of gratitude
Getting your depressed family or friend to start counting his or her blessings will help immensely. I have often noticed that the moment people forget to be grateful is when they begin to spiral into really bad depression. Failing to notice one’s numerous blessings starts to take a mental toll so gently remind them of all the good in their lives whatever it may be.
Spiritual connection
I have also noticed that the stronger someone’s spiritual state is the less likely they are to fall into depression. So remind your loved one to have faith and be strong and endure as well as they can because it will end soon as God see’s their suffering.
Every day is a new beginning
Explain to the person who is suffering from depression that that every day is a fresh start. Remind them to wake up and try to make today better than their yesterday and to not let bad things from their past chain them down. But in the end just remember to always listen carefully to what people are saying because everyone just needs someone to talk to sometimes whether depressed or not. And you could be their saving grace if you just sincerely do the best that you can do.
